Gujarat’s First Green School
Cygnus aims to be among India's first few Green Schools with the highly coveted LEED certification. The school building while providing a healthy environment is itself an interactive teaching tool. Children will experience, learn and practise eco-friendly methods while maturing into environmentally responsible citizens.
Some of the green aspects incorporated in the Cygnus campus are detailed below.
Architecturally, the structures have been planned with the glazed areas on the north side and shaded ones on south, this keeps the classrooms naturally ventilated yet thermally insulated at all times of the day.
Additionally, windows have been provided in the north and doors in the south which shall aid in achieving excellent cross ventilation through all the rooms.
The walls have been built using Fly-Ash blocks, finished with insulating plasters and textured surfaces. This is an innovative climate insulation technique which helps in keeping the interiors warm during the winters and cool during the summers.
Each floor has been provided with open, green balconies which keep the structures breathing at all times and provide a fresh, soothing environment within.
Elevation Fins have been added on all the floor windows with pergolas at
the top to act as direct sunlight barriers and effectively provide indirect and glare free sunlight.
The roofs and terraces have also been laid with over/under deck insulating layers.
For achieving energy-efficiency, we have used HVAC systems with ozone-friendly refrigerants and have provided solar street lights and energy saving lamps (CFL, LED lightings) for optimal power use.
We have instituted a rainwater harvesting systems on the campus along with a Sewage Treatment Plant to generate water for landscape irrigation. Drip irrigation has been installed to optimize on the water required to maintain our large landscaped areas.
Lastly, Waste Management and Bio-degradation systems along with provisions for vermiculture are being set up within the school campus.
