Reuse of Catalyst CASE STUDY

OPPORTUNITY

Sodium Metaperiodate is used as an oxidising agent in the manufacturing process of Gemcitabine, Finasteride, Docetaxel and Dutasteride.
We found an opportunity to recover Iodine from the spent streams wherein Sodium Metaperiodate was being used. This would substantially reduce the waste treatment load, apart from potential cost savings.

INTERVENTION

The spent streams of Gemcitabine and Finasteride were identified as part of this initiative, as current and future volumes of Docetaxel and Dutasteride were found to be inadequate.
A team comprising strategic thinking, procurement, external manufacturing and technology and process was formed to drive this initiative.
Team visits were organised to respective Strategic Business Partners (SBP) units where the stage analyses were carried out. A process for recovery was identified through a detailed route scanning. At the same time an external manufacturing team worked with T&P to establish the process at lab and then at plant scale.
OUTCOME

We achieved 70% Iodine recovery from spent of Gemcitabine process.

Samples were sent to prospective buyers for evaluation with price estimate and finally a process was implemented to ensure recovery of Iodine from the waste streams of both Gemcitabine and Finasteride with a potential estimated savings of more than INR 80 million for FY 2013 projected volumes, as an additional benefit apart from effluent reduction.
