Overview
At Dr. Reddy's we consider the judicious use of fresh water as a prime responsibility. We recognise that high-quality water is vital for consistent and top-quality production. Extensive use of water as a direct as well as indirect ingredient for formulation, rinsing, sanitising and cleaning poses challenges that require us to question conventional thinking and explore new technologies and solutions to remain water positive, as well as economically competitive.
Consequently, we have been exploring new technologies and integrated solutions to reduce water consumption and increase wastewater recycling. In fact, our wastewater recycling plant which was imported at an investment of INR 400 million in 2000-01 was the first fully functional plant in India. Over the years our initiatives have taken hold and gained ground within the organisation.
The highlight of this year has been the commissioning of our second wastewater treatment facility in formulations. Besides this, significant resources have been invested to reduce water consumption, and effluent load.

A cross-section of these initiatives include:
Installation
of Air Cooled
Chillers
Initiation of
Water
Balancing
Introduction

Recycling

Modification
of ETPs for

efficiency
Online
Monitoring

Post commissioning of the Zero Liquid Discharge Plant (ZLDP) in FY 2008-09, the absolute water consumption at the Biologics Development Center has reduced by 50%.
Our specific water consumption ('000 m3 / INR million sales) continued its decline by 2%. Due to enhanced production, our absolute water consumption rose by 7% this year.
