Overview
At Dr. Reddy's, we aim to conserve energy at every possible stage of the drug making process - from discovery research to pre-clinical testing, from lab scale to bulk active scale-ups, and then from formulations to finishing facility. We realise that each of these functions, facilities, and processes have energy requirements.
On an average the pharmaceutical industry consumes approximately US $1billion of energy annually. Turn this staggering figure on its head and we get an idea of the energy saving potential.*

At Dr. Reddy's, we have adopted an inclusive,
multi-pronged approach to enhancing energy efficiency that encompasses each one of our facilities, operations and management personnel.

  Highlights of this thrust include:
Designing the formulation plant under construction at the Visakhapatnam SEZ, to incorporate elements required for LEED certification (Gold)
Employing energy efficient compressed air systems
Installing a boiler that operates on Bagasse
Integrating various electrical systems and load balancing, thus optimising the load sharing for transformers
Investing in solar technology at sites
Use of energy efficient air-conditioners

We work closely with engineers to integrate their energy saving expertise along with the current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) or Good Engineering Practices (GEP) standards. As a result, our new plants are being designed to be more energy efficient, and existing ones are being upgraded to produce more for every watt consumed.

Energy Consumption
This year saw a marginal rise of 5% in absolute energy consumption as compared to last year and registered a marked decrease of 5% in the specific energy consumption ('000 GJ / INR million sales)

Specific Energy Usage Unit Sale (mn) I FY 03-04 = 100

  Absolute Energy Usage (‘000 GJ)

At Dr. Reddy's we are shedding light on issues that lead to energy drain. Employees are being sensitized and the drive for energy conservation has been gathering momentum across all units.
